Joint Research/Communications Fellowship with Sustainable Endowments Institute

The Sustainable Endowments Institute (SEI), a special project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, seeks highly motivated and reliable individuals for a full time Joint Research and Communications Fellowship this summer.

The fellowship positions will last 10-12 weeks, dependent on applicant interest and/or project responsibilities, starting on or after June 1, 2015 . Flexible scheduling arrangements can be considered in certain circumstances.

The Institute’s successful Research Fellows program is entering its tenth year and has involved undergraduate/graduate students and alumni from dozens of leading schools including: Brandeis, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Kalamazoo, Michigan, Northeastern, Oberlin, Penn, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara, Vermont Law School, Williams, and Yale.

Farm & Forestry Internships!

Oakton has just posted two new internship opportunities for students related to the area of sustainability:

Forestry Intern (Mount Prospect Public Works – Forestry Division) Pay: $12.50-13.50 Hours: 40 hrs/week (hours M-F 7-3:30pm; Summer; 12 weeks) Location: Mount Prospect Assignments will include data updating for the computerized tree inventory, scouting for tree disease and insect problems, responding to tree related service requests and working with municipal crews. Candidates should have excellent tree identification skills, some computer course work, 1 or 2 years college level training in arboriculture or related field and valid a driver’s license.

Farm Intern (The Talking Farm) Pay: $10 Hours: 20 hrs/week (8 weeks; preferred start date of June 2015) Location: Skokie The intern will learn about and be implementing programs related to soil creation and preparations, crop rotations, companion crops, seeding/planting, harvesting, selling produce, tools and machinery, and other agricultural topics.

National Wildlife Federation Looking for Student Reporters

Environmental Journalism Competition

Are you a great writer? Do you love to take photographs or make video shorts? Have you participated in the Eco-Schools USA and/or Schoolyard Habitat program? Would you love to share local environmental issues?

The National Wildlife Federation would like to invite students ages 13-21 to join, report, and compete in the 2015 Young Reporters for the Environment-USA competition.

What is Young Reporters for the Environment? 

This environmental journalism competition invites youth between the ages of 13-21 to report on topics related to the environment. Participants submit an article, photo, or video to the competition for a chance to win great prizes, plus national and international recognition.

Student Worker Wanted! Sustainability Research at Oakton Community College!

Position description is below:

Specific Skills/Aptitudes: Students with intended major and career goals which encompass sustainability, green technology, or related field are preferred. Candidates should:

-Express passion for occupations that are affected by activities such as conserving energy, developing alternative energy, reducing pollution and recycling.

-Have a demonstrated proficiency with Excel, willingness to learn how to use data tracking software and be adept at using the internet to conduct research.

-Communication skills, both verbal and written, are important for this position as it will require individuals be resourceful and comfortable engaging Oakton staff, college personnel from other schools, and fellow students in conversation.

Essential Duties and Functions: The Student Researcher in Sustainability will assist Oakton’s Sustainability Team and Green Committee in projects that support our sustainability goals and green initiatives. Projects will vary by term, but all will relate to Oakton’s efforts in improving the sustainability of our campuses and its operations. Potential projects include: Tracking energy consumption of various appliances throughout the College and creating a report regarding usage, assisting staff with waste reduction goals through educational messaging and trash assessment, researching and reporting on best practices of colleges and universities regarding sustainability, entering project data into appropriate programs. Though the majority of tasks will involve a standard office environment, the ideal candidate should be open to “getting dirty” with occasional outdoor activities, sorting and identifying waste, etc.

Scholarship Opportunity–Apps due April 20

Each year, the Cook County College Teachers Union awards $1,000 scholarship awards. One student from each of the seven City Colleges of Chicago and one student from each of the seven suburban colleges is eligible to receive a scholarship.

The awards are open to all current full-time students attending a community college represented by the Cook County College Teachers Union. All applicants must have previously completed at least 24 credit hours at the college with a grade point average of at least 3.0.

The deadline for this year’s Norman G. Swenson Scholarship is Monday, April 20, 2015.
