Essential Job Functions This person will serve in the leadership role for communications and associated outreach activities for Appalachian’s Office of Sustainability. Position promotes Sustainability on our campus through communication of and participation in various programs that connect to our Faculty, Staff, Students, Outside Partners and the Community. Duties include serving as communications lead, program/project manager, providing consultation, counseling, performing program/project administration, conducting information research and analysis, and marketing Sustainability programs; and supervising student workers as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position Knowledge of Sustainability principles and practices. Knowledge and experience with managing and developing communications or marketing campaigns and programs. Knowledge and ability to plan and execute events. Experience with modern web-based editing/development and social media communications. Knowledge and experience leading social media campaigns is highly desirable.Strong written and verbal communications skills. Strong ability and experience giving presentations to various audience types on topics related campus sustainability initiatives, measures and programs. Proven ability to successfully lead, interact with, and supervise college students.
Preferred Qualifications Prefer 4-year degree in a sustainability focused or related degree program and at least three years of experience with marketing and communications. Will also accept marketing or communications degree program with demonstrated experience in sustainability. Knowledge and experience with campus based sustainability programs is highly desirable.

Ability to promote and market assigned area(s) and persuade clients of the needs and beneficial outcomes of the program. Ability to convey sensitive information or decisions to clients. Ability to work toward mutual resolutions that are in the best interests of the organization and across organizational lines. Ability to plan and implement marketing strategies and functions. Ability to apply creativity to development of strategies and functions.Consultancy Skills: Knowledge of the link between the program and the organizational strategic plan. Ability to guide and collaborate with clients to execute program activities. Ability to make decisions within the boundaries of established program policy and procedure. Ability to follow up with colleagues and resource providers to resolve issues. Ability to assess and determine the best course of action. Ability to identify and resolve typical operational issues in assigned area(s). Ability to propose a course of action to address more unprecedented issues.

Information Analysis/Decision Making: Ability to gather, organize and analyze program information, data and/or financial information. Ability to review, examine and prepare documents. Ability to make recommendations based on the results of that information. Ability to identify, recognize and resolve problems that have established guidelines and precedents.

Leadership, Professional Knowledge: 1. Develops and manages program/project plan. Provides consultation on issues and requests from clients. Consults with higher-level professionals to discuss alternative solutions. May supervise staff. 2. Develops and implements short-term strategies consistent with program goals.

Program/Project Administration: Ability to administer and/or manage a program with established guidelines and standards in its entirety or several components of a multi-faceted program. Ability to ensure program/project accountability. Ability to define scope, goals, tasks, deliverables, timelines, tools, and resources. Ability to assess the needs of the work unit or project. Ability to determine any gaps, and recommend changes in procedures, workflow and work assignments to improve efficiency and effectiveness in performance of individuals and the work unit as a whole. Ability to develop and monitor program/project databases, schedules and reports. Ability to ensure accuracy of data and compliance with program standards. Ability to perform professional program administrative duties, including technical decisions. Ability to collaborate in the development and completion of grants and contracts. Ability to administer pre- and post-award agreements. Ability to prepare reports as required.

Pay will be commensurate with applicant competencies, budget, equity and market considerations.
