We invite you to a climate data rescue event at Oakton Community College, sponsored by The Green Committee at Oakton. We believe in supporting the fundamental role of science in sound government policy. Please help us preserve vulnerable federal climate, environmental, and transportation data. We need programmers, data scientists, and science enthusiasts! Bring your laptop and come ready to learn.

This event is part of a series of climate data rescue events happening in the Chicago area in recent months. Others were hosted by Chi Hack Night, University of Chicago, and Northwestern University. It is also part of ongoing international collaborations—with coordinated efforts from the Environmental Data and Governance Initiative, Internet Archive, and higher education institutions (University of Pennsylvania, University of Toronto, and UCLA).

Ready to make a difference? We recommend that volunteers fit ONE of the following criteria:

  • Familiar with federal agency websites and have strong writing skills
  • Comfortable browsing the web and have great attention to detail
  • Have strong front-end web experience and enjoy research
  • Skilled technologist with a programming language of your choice, comfortable with the command line, or experience working with structured data
  • Have data or web archiving experience, or strong tech skills and an attention to detail
  • Have experience working with scientific data (particularly climate or environmental data) or with metadata practices

Volunteers must read the overview section of the DataRescue workflow to learn more about the different roles when signing up:

  • Surveyors – Identify key programs, datasets, and documents on Federal Agency websites
  • Seeders/Sorters – Identify important URLs and ensure they can be crawled by Internet Archive
  • Researchers – Inspect “uncrawlable” list and investigate how it can best be harvested
  • Harvesters – Capture “uncrawlable” data, requires substantial technical expertise
  • Checkers/Baggers – Perform quality assurance on dataset and verify content according to standards
  • Describers – Creates a descriptive record in the DataRefuge CKAN repository
  • Hosts – Learn how to host a DataRescue event for your organization
