Electric Vehicle Charging at Oakton!

We are thrilled to announce Oakton’s first electric vehicle charging station has been installed on the Des Plaines campus.  Located in Lot D near our LEED Gold certified Margaret Burke Lee Science and Health Careers Center, this dual Chargepoint system will allow students, employees, and community members a convenient way to refuel their electric vehicles when they visit campus.  Electric vehicle purchases are growing globally and in the U.S. and Oakton is excited to support the push towards greener transportation. Within the first hour of use, we already had drivers waiting to utilize the system!

There are many benefits to driving electric vehicles. Here are a few from the U.S. Department of Energy:

  1. Energy Security–With 24% of petroleum coming from outside of the country, use of electric vehicles can reduce our dependence on imported petroleum and increase energy security.
  2. Fuel Economy–The efficient nature of electric vehicle motors mean drivers can get more miles per kWh than the equivalent mpg with gas.
  3. Infrastructure Availability–Because electric vehicles can be charged in a number of places like home or work, there is flexibility to fill up when and where it is convenient. There are currently over 35,000 Chargepoint stations alone!
  4. Costs–Although initial costs for buying electric vehicles are still relatively high, tax incentives at the federal level and in various states can help close the gap. The saving on gas and repairs though are huge!
  5. Emissions–Because they are not using gasoline and burning fossil fuels, the vehicles themselves emit no (in the case of electric vehicles) or very low (in the case of plug-in hybrid vehicles) harmful emissions. The best way to reduce association emissions though is when the electricity is coming from a renewable source like solar or wind.

And of course, driving electric means an overall reduction in greenhouse gases for transportation, even after considering the entire life cycle of the vehicle. The charging station is one of the many ways Oakton is thinking about our environmental impact and taking action on climate. We hope you will visit soon!

Green Parking on Campus

As noted in our Sustainability Guidelines, Oakton is committed to climate action, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable transportation. Beginning late summer 2017, students, employees, and community members who visit our Des Plaines campus will have more options for green parking. Keep your eyes out for new signage in some of these areas!

Electric Vehicle Charging
A Chargepoint Level 2 dual charging station is currently being installed on the Des Plaines campus at the south side of Parking Lot D (close to the Lee Center). Drivers of electric vehicles may park in one of the two designated spots while they are charging. Out of respect for other EV drivers, we ask that you move your vehicle to a different space when your charge is complete.

Once activated, Oakton station will be visible on all PlugShare maps.

Low-Emitting and Fuel Efficient Vehicle Parking
A row of reserved spots for low-emitting and fuel efficient vehicle parking is located on the East side of the Lee Center on Des Plaines campus, in Parking Lot D. A second set of three spots will be available to employees only in Parking Lot C after July 1st (parking is currently reserved for the ECE Center).

Not sure if your vehicle is considered fuel efficient? Electric or hybrid vehicles and motorcycles are a quick yes! For other, gas-powered vehicles, find your car’s Green Rating using the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) guide. If your vehicle scores a 40 or higher, you are encouraged to park in these locations!

Internship Fair at Oakton, January 25

Internships are among the most important predictors of career success, allowing students to gain professional experience, build their résumés and explore careers. With that in mind, Oakton Community College is hosting a Jan. 25 spring internship information session and fair at the college’s Skokie campus, Room P103, 7701 N. Lincoln Avenue.

“Internships provide real-world work experiences that can open doors to future employment,” says Internship Coordinator Shannon McKenzie. “I invite students to bring their résumés and meet representatives from our partner businesses to learn about internship opportunities.”

Oakton’s internship program is seeking to fill approximately 75 internship positions with local companies in a variety of fields, including accounting, business, sales, marketing, information technology, manufacturing, graphic design, communications and politics/government. Most positions include compensation between $9-12 per hour.

Oakton’s free internship events take place Wednesday, Jan. 25, in Skokie. The day includes the following events:

• Information Session (11:30 a.m. – noon): Learn about the Oakton internship program, including benefits to students, eligibility requirements, application instructions and résumé and cover letter tips.
• Internship Fair (Noon – 1:30 p.m.): Meet representatives from several of Oakton’s partner businesses to learn about internship opportunities.

Attendance at the fair and information session is not required for students to apply to the internship program or to be considered for any potential internship position. Environmental Graphiti: The Art of Climate Change, Alisa Singer

The Foundation, Koehnline Museum, and Division of Science and Health Careers are excited to present the artwork of Alisa Singer in an exhibit – Environmental Graphiti: The Art of Climate Change. Please find a link to her website here. The artwork has been featured around the country and installed at many other prominent universities and galleries around the area such as DePaul, UIC, Loyola, Northwestern, and more.

Artist Alisa Singer’s digital paintings, printed on metal and derived from graphs, charts, and other scientific data, use contemporary abstract art to challenge and expand the way we think about climate change. The works will be on display in the Lee Center, First Floor Lobby from January 25-February 25, 2017. Please join us and share widely!

Women’s and Gender Studies Conference: In Challenging Times: Women, Activism, and Leadership–Call for Proposals!

WOMEN’S AND GENDER STUDIES CONFERENCE

In Challenging Times:  Women, Activism and Leadership

The Women’s and Gender Studies Program Steering Committee of Oakton Community College, located in Des Plaines, Illinois in the near northwest suburbs of Chicago, invites proposals for its biennial conference to be held March 24, 2017. This one-day conference, In Challenging Times:  Women, Activism and Leadership, will present scholarly and creative work by feminist activists, writers, scientists, visual and performing artists, and scholars that examines the challenges confronting feminism and the Women’s and Gender Studies discipline in the current political and cultural climate.

The Conference keynote will be noted activist, writer and scholar Barbara Ransby.  Ransby is distinguished professor of African American Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and History at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she directs the campus-wide Social Justice Initiative.  She also serves as current president of the National Women’s Studies Association.

The Steering Committee seeks proposals for panel presentations—consisting of research papers, readings, performances, or media  presentations—as well as roundtable discussions and poster sessions focused on topics related to the overall conference theme.  We are especially interested in submissions that approach the theme using an intersectional feminist analysis.

Possible topic areas could include, but are not limited to:

  • Continuing challenges to feminism—the word and the movement
  • Race and class as categories of feminist analysis
  • Achieving gender equity in the political arena
  • Gendered violence in the media, home, street and workplace.
  • Intergenerational conflicts and collaborations
  • Challenges to Reproductive Rights
  • Gendered and racialized bodies
  • Feminism and white privilege
  • Social Media and cyberfeminism—dangers and opportunities
  • Feminist challenges to environmental degradation
  • Confronting ableism and other constructs of the normative body
  • Feminist responses to incarceration and detention
  • Gendered health and medicine
  • Transgender and gender queer inclusion
  • Transnational feminist activism
  • Activism using new media and technology
  • Women in STEM and non-traditional fields
  • Feminism and Cultural Criticism
  • Feminist leadership
  • Feminist activism and the arts
  • Community colleges and other alternative sites of feminist activism
  • Achieving equity in the workplace
  • Activist literature and media
  • Eliminating racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination in American education

Panel presentations consist of individual research presentations or performances organized around a single topic, concluding with a brief question and answer session. Panels should feature three or four presenters, as well as a non-presenting moderator responsible for introductions, time keeping, and overall coordination. Sessions are 75 minutes; time is divided equally among presenters, with 15 minutes for introductions and discussion. In lieu of a panel, selected one-person workshops are also acceptable. Participants are encouraged to present material to the audience rather than simply read a paper.

Roundtable discussions feature between four and six presenters, hosted by a moderator. Each participant makes brief opening remarks on a particular theme or project, followed by discussion and audience participation. Sessions are 75 minutes, including introductions and opening statements.

Poster sessions include display in a central location throughout the day as well as at a special afternoon reception. Presenters must be available to set up, take down, and discuss posters with viewers at the reception.

Proposals by established scholars and artists are welcome. Both graduate and undergraduate students are also encouraged to submit.

The Steering Committee encourages proposals for fully-formed panels and roundtables. It also welcomes proposals from individual presenters; individuals will be grouped with presenters on similar themes.

All accepted presenters must register for the conference. Fees—which include lunch and refreshments—are $15 for Oakton students, $20 for all other students, and $35 for non-students.

Proposals must clearly state the type of presentation (panel, roundtable, poster session), and include:

  • Title and topic (see list for suggestions).
  • An abstract of no more than 300 words.
  • Names and brief biographies (no more than three sentences) for all presenters.
  • Contact information (including e-mail).

The Women’s and Gender Studies Steering Committee will review all proposals and make selections based on appropriateness of topic, quality of proposal, and contribution to Women’s and Gender Studies scholarship and creative endeavors. The Committee will pay special attention to proposals that feature intersectional and multidisciplinary approaches and/or inclusion of presenters from faculty, artist, and student groups. Oakton will attempt to meet audiovisual equipment needs—please state such needs clearly in the proposal. Accepted presenters will receive an audiovisual equipment checklist prior to the conference.

Deadline for proposals is February 15. Notification of proposal status (accepted or declined) will be sent via e-mail no later than February 27.
